Childbirth in the home environment
Kortánová, Denisa ; Šmatláková, Lenka (advisor) ; Šimůnková, Jana (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis Childbirth in the home environment deals with births outside a health care facility. The theoretical part describes the birth as such, including the different variants of preparation, through the different birth times and the people who can accompany the woman to the birth. Subsequently, the bachelor thesis discusses obstetric care in a health care facility and at home, the individual experiences of women in this issue, and the advantages, disadvantages, and possible complications of home and maternity care. At the end of the theoretical part of the thesis, it mentions some legislative information and, last but not least, provides information on the differences in obstetric care in different countries. At the end of the theoretical part, selected studies and statistics on similar topics are mentioned for completeness. The main aim of the thesis was to find out why women prefer home births to hospital births and whether they are aware of the possible risks. For the practical part of the thesis, I designed two questionnaires which were distributed through social networking sites to suitable respondents. Keywords: birth, homebirth, natural childbirth, alternative birth, complications during parturition, midwife
Homebirth: intimate partners' perspectives
Jiřičková, Barbora ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Ezrová, Magdaléna (referee)
This bachelor thesis addresses the topic of a planned home-birth from the perspective of the father of the child and investigates his role in the decision-making concerning the birth place and the birth itself. The experience of the man is examined in the context of the whole couple. The thesis is based on qualitative research which examines the above-mentioned topics in the Czech context using semi-structured interviews with women who gave birth at home and their partners. The empirical chapters represent the results of the thematic analysis and their interpretation, supported by relevant literature. The thematic categories that frame the respondents' statements are three: decision-making process, presence at birth and the presence of the father from the mother's point of view. The study indicates that men are often not fully integrated into the decision-making process itself. The reasons for the low level of integration of men into the decision-making process can be found on the part of both women and men. The work presents which factors might determine the male experience with home birth, as well as which circumstances might affect the degree of involvement in childbirth itself. Furthermore, the work presents strategies by which men overcome the fears associated with childbirth at home and...
Alternative methods in obstetrics in Czech Republic and Poland
PODULKA, Paulina Agata
The Bachelor's thesis covers the topic of alternative methods in obstetrics in two neighbouring countries; the Czech Republic and Poland. Alternative birthing methods have become rather popular. After years of medication and classical methods in obstetrics women discover the magic of natural childbirth again. The core idea of the alternative approach is the return to natural childbirth and respect to the mother's personal wishes.
Childbirth as a journey
Haken, Petra Sofie ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
The childbirth in the medical discourse is still viewed as a proces of high risk. The birth at home is then in such a discourse considered to be hazardous practice which can threaten the life of the unborn child. This paper tries to contribute to the discussions about the freedom of choice of the place of birth. The birth is then viewed from the perspective of gender as a constructed phenomenon culturaly and socialy biased. The main focus is on the research of the experience of women who gave birth at home. Their experience is to be considered as constructed as well, therefore I investigate the leverages that influence their interpretation of the birth experience. I am also interested in researching how their experience influenced their futher life and what meaning they asign to it in the context of their life experience as such. Further interest of this paper is to research the knowledge that the women, who gave birth at home, used during the proces of childbirth. The main focus is to elicit the auhoritative knowledge based on which they make decisions and how this knowledge is constituted.
"With Ivana at home" - natural childbirth as a disruption of power discourse: discoursive analysis of www.pribehyproivanu.cz
Zemanová, Eva ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jahodová, Dita (referee)
The topic of this thesis is woman's experience with natural childbirth and its potential for disruption of medical discourse, which is in the Czech Republic in obstetrics still dominating. Through the method of discoursive analysis I am trying to generate any behavior that may be in conflict with social expectations and may question norms and standards in the field of pregnancy and obstetrics. I am also trying to trace whether and how does the deepening and gaining of the birth knowledge lead to the transformation of woman's identity. Theoretically, the work is grounded in a post-structuralist paradigm and builds on the concepts of biopower, performative acting and authoritative knowledge. Data sources are stories written in support of a midwife Ivana Königsmarková and published on the internet (www.pribehyproivanu.cz).
Disagreement about childbirth
Hanousková, Lenka ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
This thesis deals with disagreement between midwives and doctors about the fact where and in which conditions mothers should give birth to a child. While the doctors support the present way when most children are born in hospitals under doctor's control, midwives argue for so called natural childbirth when women deliver the child surrounded by familiar environment and with midwife's assistance. The description of both groups behaviour is based on the theory of Peirre Bourdieu. Midwives are focused on the change of their status in the process of childbirth while doctors want to preserve the present situation. Both groups use different discourses while creating their professional position providing different services. Doctors' way is more technological and clinical, while midwives create their professional position in more psychological way. There is a competitive fight in which both group use strategy of their own professionalization and disprofessionalization of the rival group and different interpretation of the same data. Because of disadvantageous position of midwives in the process of childbirth, they create their own strategies against doctors.
